Sewage Treatment Plant or Septic Tank?

You’ve got a failed septic tank system, what are your options?

  1. Replace the existing soakaway.
  2. Install a pump station, and the pump the effluent to a shallower soakaway.
  3. Convert the Septic Tank to a sewage treatment plant.
  4. Replace the Septic Tank with a sewage treatment plant and a soakaway.
  5. Replace it with Sewage Treatment Plant and pump to a shallow soakaway.
  6. Replace it with Sewage Treatment Plant and pump to the ditch.
  7. Replace it with Sewage Treatment Plant and simply gravitate to a ditch.

Having a product that works is a worthwhile investment for the long term. There are a variety of factors to consider such as:

  • the number of people on the system (Population Equivalent)
  • do you need to employ a pump
  • how much space and access is available for the installation
  • the work should be carried out by qualified British Water engineers

Septic Tank

If you will be discharging into a river, keep in mind that the Environmental Agency requires effluent to be discharged at 20 BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand). Read more about this process here.  A Septic Tank can only produce 200 BOD with the best conditions, so in this situation we recommend installing an Allerton ConSept inside the Septic Tank.

Sewage Treatment Plant

A sewage treatment plant is a great option for treating the effluent from your property. We have products for large and small buildings, plus everything in between.

Septic Tanks vs Sewage Treatment Plant

The Allerton ConSept

The Allerton ConSept is the ideal solution for your septic tank conversion. The Allerton ConSept will convert your existing septic tank or cesspool into a fully functional sewage treatment system producing a final effluent that can be discharged into a watercourse or soakaway.¹

Why use the Allerton ConSept?

  • The Allerton ConSept utilises your existing septic tank so there's no need to install a heavy plant or new tank. Plus, it's quick to install which saves you time, money and disruption.

  • No moving parts inside the tank.

  • Installation within your existing septic tank means the Allerton ConSept cannot be seen or heard. However, the air blower remains outside the septic tank for easy maintenance.

  • Maintains water at correct level, keeping drains clear right up to the house.

  • Manufactured using high grade composite materials and non ferrous components means the Allerton ConSept does not corrode. This results in a long and trouble free life.

  • Aerobic process reducing smell and odours.

  • Low maintenance costs - Servicing once a year, desludging and emptying once every two years, Installation, Septic Tank Conversion Unit Servicing and Maintenance available.

  • Discharge to watercourse with permissions or to a soakaway.

  • Installation and commissioning by our British Water Accredited engineers included in package.

The Allerton ConSept will convert your existing septic tank or cesspool into a fully functional Sewage Treatment Plant producing a final effluent that can be discharged into a water course or soakaway. (We can help with the Environment Agency permit)

The raw sewage enters the septic tank which will become the aeration zone. Air blown from the Blower causes agitation in this area and breaks ups solids.

The Allerton ConSept is an aerobic treatment system and the bubbling air encourages the growth of aerobic bacteria. This is a huge improvement on traditional septic tanks which are anaerobic.

The space in the Allerton ConSept acts as a settlement zone, allowing fine solids to settle out. The treated effluent is lifted to the shallow sample chamber by syphonic action. From here the water can directly go to a water course, providing you have a permit from the environment agency.

Alternatively, the water can go into the existing soakaway as it now has a head of water to push it along the pipe and upwards into the top soil. From here it finds its way sideways and downwards.

The plug in the outlet pipe prevents water in the ground getting into the septic tank and manholes near the house. It separates the house from any groundwater so your drains will remain clear.

¹Discharge to watercourse or soakaway is subject to consent from the relevant authorities. ² ConSept illustration is not drawn to scale.

External Pump Chamber

If the location of the Diamond plant is on an incline, in a high water table area or a long distance away from the designated discharge point (ie: soakaway/water course/ditch) the final effluent may require pumping. Contact Us for help sizing your pump station.

The Diamond range can be specified with an EPC which can deliver up to 100 litres per minute of effluent at a head of 4m.

The EPC can be simply retro-fitted and is easy to maintain.

What comes with the EPC?

  • The pump chambers are manufactured from high quality glass reinforced plastic
  • 240v, 0.25kw submersible pump, integral float switch with stainless steel internals
  • The External Pump Chamber is delivered complete with the pipework and valves pre-assembled in the tank, ready for immediate installation into the ground.
  • High-level alarm included.
  • 50mm MDPE Pipe outlet
  • Junction box included
  • Invert extension kits for the EPC available (optional extra)
  • Custom made dirty water pumping stations available on request
  • Pump Station Servicing and Maintenance, Installation and Commissioning service available by our highly trained engineers.

How does the EPC work?

As the level of the liquid rises in the chamber the integral float on the pump is activated, the pump starts and pumps the liquid out of the chamber until the pump float drops and the pump turns off.

The level of the liquid will again rise and the above sequence is repeated.

If the pump fails to pump, the liquid level will rise to activate the high level float and the high level beacon will be illuminated.
